Ahoy Mateys! Block figures seem to be all the
rage right now. They're small and cute for the most part.
So, why not Pirates of the Caribbean.
This set is one of the smaller ones from the
Mega Blocks line for the second film. I thought I'd take a
look at it, and see what their set are like.
Appearance:
The package is pretty standard for POTC.
There are some decent graphics showing what's inside and the
standard skull on the front.
The actual set is contained in a case in the
shape of Jack's compass. There is some weathering and wear
sculpted into the compass which was a pleasant surprise. I
imagine a number of these will make it onto Halloween costumes
this year. One thing to note, the internal detail of the
compass is a flat decal. It's a little hard to tell that
from the picture on the package.
The set is comprised of two small islands
connected by a plank bridge. One island has a small piece of
wall and a barrel. The other has a tree and a treasure
chest.
The Jack figure is pretty nifty for his size.
He has ball jointed shoulders, hips and head. There are also
joints at the elbows, knees and wrists. There is a waist
joint but it's completely limited by the sculpt of the shirt.
11 points of articulation is more than I was expecting. The
paint is a little sloppy, but I thinks some of that is due to the
weathering applied to the clothes.
Fun:
There is a code that unlocks some tidbits on the
Mega Blocks website in the treasure chest. If you
follow it for this set, this is apparently the island was stranded
alone on. The treasure chest was placed on the island in
lieu of rum.

The treasure chest contains about 20 gold,
silver and bronze "studs". I figured these would be like the
Lego ones, but there not. These actually have a cluster of
coins sculpted on the top of them.
The tree that is sits under is well done, as
well. It's comprised of a top leafy part and a trunk.
The tree trunk and chest have both had some weathering paint
applied.
Jack comes with his cutlass, of course. He
also has foot holes that allow him to stick to the blocks.
What I didn't know is Lego figures will stick to these blocks as
well.
Overall:
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this
little set. It's a got a great little case, a good
number of pieces, and a decent figure. The details are
good and well thought through.
I have to say I might just have to get one of
the bigger sets to check out. Maybe the Black Pearl of
Flying Dutchman.
On the nostalgia side of things, this set
actually reminds me of something you would take on a visit to
Grandma's. Something that is small and in it's own case.
It'd be more fun than that doily on the back of the sofa.
