Christmas Shopping Suggestions for 2006

I was trying to figure out some of my Christmas shopping the other day, and had a thought.  Nobody really knows what I want.  My wife (bless her heart) does an amazing job of figuring out great gifts every year.  She is very supportive of my "hobby" (or addiction).  One of my stocking stuffers when we were first dating, was a a motorized Qui-Gon Jinn lolipop gadget.  I have to say this small concession to my toy collecting, made a big impression on me.

The rest of my friends and family have a little lesser degree of understanding.  So, I thought I'd put together a page of some gift items that the toy collector, nerd, or kid at heart on everyone's list could benefit from.

1. Retro Style Rockets

Let's face it.   Without Buck Rodgers® and Flash Gordon®, we probably wouldn't have Star Wars.  I love the retro styling of those old time rockets and ray guns.  While that imagined stylized future hasn't came to pass, Mad Cat Toys has some items that will certainly fill the void.  Any of these stylized rockets would look great on a desk at home or work.   I especially love the tall standing one.  It reminds me a bit of the rocket Wallace and Grommit took to the moon. ($40-$50)

2. X-Files Flukeman

Palisades Palz® were something I was very sad to see go.  I was surprised to see this on Entertainment Earth when I was flipping through recently.  One of the ookiest oddities from the X-Files and a "Lily Sanitation" Porta-Potty.  Great stocking stuffer for the conspiracy theorist on your list. ($10)

3. Star Wars (Episode VI) Tin Set

Want to make the Star Wars collector on your list happy?  Pick them up this set.  If they didn't pick up the TRU exclusive AT-AT, this is a great way to get them the Biker Scout with flip up visor.  The Endor Rebel Commando is a decent figure to boot.  All this and a great case!  ($33)

4. Bluetooth Retro Headset

You know the one thing I just don't like about cell phones, is they just aren't comfortable to talk on.  When I saw this I thought it was awesome.  My wife thought I was out of my mind.  It's a Bluetooth enabled retro styled handset for your cell phone.  If somebody on your list spends a lot of time on their cell, this is the perfect gift.  They also have a corded for version, if you're like me and don't have a Bluetooth phone.  ($29-$39)

5. PC Cassette Deck

For a long time I didn't have a CD player in my vehicle.  So I bought a lot of cassettes.  I also have a ton of tapes from back in my day.  (Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Poison, Joan Jett, etc...)  Now finally a way to play them and record them on a PC.  I'm sure this was invented by a "child of the Eighties".    At $129, this is a pretty sweet little PC mod.  Just imagine showing up for the next LAN party and cranking out some Def Leppard on tape for all the kids of the CD generation.

6.  One Book To Bind Them....

I love to give and receive books at Christmas time.   The books I have got as a presents over the years hold a special place in my collection.  I really love it when the giver inscribes something special inside.   I received a slip covered version of "The Hobbit"  when I was about 9 or 10.  There was just something special about reading the "ancient" story in a bound book inscribed with mystic runes on the cover.  This book is the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy bound together in one place with separate fold out maps.  An incredible gift for a new fan or possibly one who treasures the story, but has worn their paperback version out.  ($75)

7. Dr. Doom Archive Set

I love movie props.  If I had my way my house would look like the warehouse from "Raiders of the Lost Ark."  That's why I love these sets.  They are like small scale museum displays from the Marvel Universe.  The Dr. Doom one is the most iconic to me.  Easily recognized, and displayed in a slick way.  The crest in the middle sells the whole piece.   This 1000 piece limited edition would be a great center piece for your comic collectors memorabilia collection. ($95)

8. Hellboy Bust

No, it's not a bust of the guy from the "Amazing Race."  It's Hellboy as seen in the feature flick.  With the talking corpse hanging off his shoulder this piece would be a great piece for a collector of movie and comic memorabilia.  At 12" high this would be an imposing piece for your cubicle paranormal investigator.  ($112.50)

9. One for the Ladies....

Guys, if you have read this far, thank you.  If you haven't found a gift for the special lady in your life, buy jewelry.  You can never go wrong with diamonds and gold.  At least that is what I've been programmed to believe.   However, in addition to jewelry, get something for her to pamper herself.  SpaMoxie has lots of great ideas for this.  Such as the Central Park Fruit Fusion Scrub.  I don't claim to know what all the benefits and workings of the beauty and spa products on SpaMoxie are, but Mrs. Nerd does.  And she loves this stuff.  Her skin is way softer than mine, and she smells a whole lot sweeter.   ($28.50)

In conclusion:

Thanks, for taking the time to read through our ideas.  Hopefully, we've given you some inspiration to find the perfect gift.  May you have a safe, and joyous holiday.

Happy Holidays from TVFT!
